Case Study: Roberts of Port Dinorwic

We designed a programme to help Roberts of Port Dinorwic phase out R22 emissions – and helped them secure an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust so that they could carry out the work.

The Brief

Roberts of Port Dinorwic work with food service companies, food retailers, pubs and restaurants to provide bespoke recipe dishes. The firm has doubled in size over the past 20 years and now employs 114 people. The total floor area of the factory and offices was quoted as 50,000 square feet (4,645 m2).

Our Approach

An initial energy survey determined that refrigeration contributed significantly to their overall electricity costs. Many of those systems were operating on refrigerant R22, which has ozone depletion potential. R22 is currently being phased out, so Utilitywise was able to suggest a number of opportunities for improvement. After developing and designing an upgrade programme, we helped Roberts of Port Dinorwic obtain an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust to finance the improvement measures.

Our Solution

Roberts of Port Dinorwic implemented the project in conjunction with their preferred contractor. It resulted in a reduction in electricity consumption of around 25% – approximately £75,000 at the time of writing. In addition, Roberts of Port Dinorwic has reduced their usage of R22 from older leaking systems and significantly reduced its carbon footprint. The project has also helped the business operationally, with improvements in both production and controlled temperatures throughout the factory areas.
